What is mallet finger?

Definition or Meaning

Mallet finger” definition:

Also known as mallet thumb or boutonniere deformity, mallet finger is a condition in which the end of the bone in the tip of the finger becomes bent or angled. The condition may occur because of repeated use of an injured or swollen digit, or as a result of an injury to one part of the digit while another part remains intact.

Most cases are successfully treated with conservative therapy such as wearing splints and protecting the injured area from further trauma. Rarely, surgery is necessary to correct severe injuries that have not responded to nonsurgical treatment.
